About Us:

Virgo Strategic is a consulting firm which partners with venture-backed enterprise technology startups across three practice areas to turn proven technologies into lasting businesses:

  • Planning & Analysis: Metrics & unit economics studies, financial driver-based models, strategic planning processes, ops planning & budgeting.

  • Operations Transformations: (re)buildouts of core functions including finance, HR and GTM operations; interim exec services and support with insourcing talent.

  • Transaction Readiness & Support: Guide and facilitate fundraising and M&A processes including development of company presentations, providing modeling and quantitative storytelling, and acting as transaction PMO with data room management.

Founded by a former CFO/COO and a team of operators, we deliver transformative results by building like cofounders, thinking like investors, and aligning our economics.

About the Role:

We seek a Senior Consultant to join our FinOps team, working with Partners to deliver high-impact, project-based finance transformation engagements. Rather than operating as an outsourced or fractional finance function, our FinOps team designs, builds, and implements the foundational systems, processes, reporting, and analytical capabilities that early- and growth-stage startups need to scale with confidence.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with client stakeholders and Virgo project teams to execute well-defined scopes of work — from financial operations diagnostics and close-process redesigns to reporting buildouts, model development, systems implementation, and audit/readiness work. You will be a hands-on problem solver who can translate ambiguous challenges into structured project plans, deliverables, and lasting improvements.

You will play a pivotal role in standing up scalable FP&A and controllership capabilities for our clients. This includes designing processes, implementing tools, creating reporting and forecasting frameworks, and establishing the operational rhythms required for a high-functioning finance organization. While our work is deeply collaborative and integrated with client teams, we operate explicitly as project-based consultants, focused on delivering outcomes rather than providing ongoing day-to-day staffing.

Monthly Gatherings: We meet in-person approximately once per month for collaborative planning, decision-making, and team building. Advance notice is provided, and attendance is expected barring extenuating circumstances.

Location: Candidates should be within commuting distance to New York City. Relocation assistance is not provided. This role is hybrid; our Manhattan facilities are available for use five days per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Operations:

    • Contribute to project-based reviews of clients’ finance operations to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and control weaknesses across revenue and AR, procurement and AP, payroll operations, close processes, and reporting workflows.

    • Support the design and implementation of improved processes, controls, and operating rhythms tailored to the client’s growth stage and operating model.

    • Assist with evaluating, recommending, and implementing finance tools and systems (e.g., AP automation, close management tools, reporting systems) to help clients scale effectively.

    • Build templates, SOPs, process maps, and documentation to support client adoption and smooth handoff at the end of the project.

  • Financial Reporting:

    • Assist in diagnostics of monthly close processes and help execute project plans to shorten and strengthen clients’ close cycles.

    • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations, close schedules, and internal reporting as part of finance infrastructure buildouts.

    • Draft and refine internal financial statements and management reports, ensuring accuracy and consistency with Virgo standards.

    • Support the development of accounting policies, process narratives, and audit-ready workpapers.

  • Financial Planning and Analysis:

    • Assist in developing dashboards, KPI frameworks, and recurring metric reporting.

    • Support the build-out and maintenance of financial models (forecasting, hiring plans, SaaS metrics, scenario analysis) with input from partners and senior consultants.

    • Support the design of budgeting and forecasting processes, including templates, intake structures, and cross-functional coordination.

    • Conduct analyses that translate financial and operational data into insights and actionable recommendations within the project scope.

  • Client Engagement:

    • Participate in client discovery sessions to gather requirements, clarify challenges, and understand business context.

    • Prepare client-ready deliverables — analyses, reports, dashboards, presentations — with a high standard of clarity and quality.

    • Present findings in meetings alongside senior Virgo team members, ensuring stakeholders understand recommendations and next steps.

    • Collaborate closely with Virgo team members to manage project timelines, track deliverables, and maintain alignment with the defined SOW.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • 4–7 years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, FP&A, or consulting — ideally in high-growth startups, advisory firms, or environments where systems and processes are being built or rebuilt.

  • Familiarity with GAAP accounting, especially the mechanics of revenue recognition, accruals, and consolidations; capable of preparing or reviewing reconciliations and supporting accounting policy development.

  • Strong analytical skills with hands-on experience building and maintaining driver-based financial models, KPI frameworks, and performance dashboards.

  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous or fast-moving environments and translating open-ended questions into structured analyses, deliverables, and recommendations.

  • Meaningful exposure to finance systems and tooling, such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, Ramp, Bill.com, Brex, Airbase, Mosaic, Cube, Notion, or close/FP&A automation platforms. Experience assisting with system evaluations, implementations, or process automation is highly valued.

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel (index/match/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, scenario modeling, data cleansing) and PowerPoint (building clear, executive-ready presentations).

  • Ability to interpret a startup’s financial statements, understand cash runway dynamics, and explain financial implications to non-finance stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication skills — able to synthesize findings into clear written and verbal outputs tailored to audiences ranging from analysts to founders.

  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally (Finance, People, Sales, GTM Ops, Engineering) to gather inputs, pressure-test assumptions, and drive alignment.

  • CPA or similar credential is a plus but not required.

  • Experience working with distributed or global teams is a plus.

Desired Behavioral Traits:

  • Builder mindset — energized by designing, refining, and standing up new processes, tools, and reporting frameworks; thrives on creating order from ambiguity.

  • Consulting orientation without ego — collaborates well with teammates, takes direction from senior leaders, and contributes meaningfully to structured project execution.

  • High accountability and follow-through — reliably delivers high-quality work on time, manages dependencies, and escalates risks proactively.

  • Strong judgment around “fast vs. perfect” — knows when scrappiness is appropriate and when rigor is required for investor-facing or audit-ready outputs.

  • Adaptable and comfortable with constant learning — enjoys working across multiple clients, business models, and technology stacks; absorbs new contexts quickly.

  • Values transparency and constructive dialogue — open to feedback, willing to share perspectives, and contributes to collective problem-solving.

  • Comfortable with remote/asynchronous work, while demonstrating the proactive communication needed to stay aligned on project plans and deliverables.

  • Low-ego, high-trust collaborator who builds rapport with client teams while maintaining clear professional boundaries as a consultant.

  • Curious, resourceful, and experimental — tests ideas quickly, iterates based on results, and seeks pragmatic solutions.

Firm Benefits:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance benefits through our PEO and the various providers they work with.

  • 401(k) with company match.

  • Unlimited PTO.

  • Firm closed 24 December to 2 January.

  • Parental Leave: 4 months of fully paid leave after requisite service period.
